DEEP OCEAN

It’s 2006 and an 80-year-old bull sperm whale is found stranded on a beach in New Zealand. He doesn’t belong there and cannot survive long. As the local people gather round him, a look at his great body exposed on the beach shows the battle scars of a life lived in the most extreme place on earth - the deep oceans - huge sucker marks, deep scratches and chunks missing from his tail...

The re-telling of the whale’s life takes us back to 1929 when he was a two-year-old bull and follows him through to the present day. We watch him come face to face with animals that were once thought to be mythical, such as the mysterious 15-metre oarfish and the enormous squids of legend.

As he dives with his family pod to more than two kilometres below the surface the marine-scape comes vividly to life as never seen before - so impenetrable is the darkness for human eyes. Exploring impossibly deep canyons, underwater volcanoes and the highest and longest mountain ranges on Earth, the whale displays his supreme adapta­tion to this harsh but awe-inspiring environment and takes us on a rollercoaster ride through some of the most spectacular landscapes on Earth. From the towering ancient spires of the Lost City, to massive undersea canyons and huge fields of black smokers we get to know the whale’s world in all its breathtaking detail and epic scale.

But this is no pleasure cruise - the whale faces danger at every turn - tsunamis, earthquakes and deep ocean submarine landslides, attacks from stealthy pods of killer whales and astounding battles with giant and colossal squid - until now, creatures of legend.

The programme also charts the whale’s contact with man and his relationship with the ocean. Our knowledge of the deep in the 1920s is virtually non-existent but progresses over time in parallel with the whale’s life, from early transatlantic cables to deadly whaling ships and the gradual encroachment of humankind on the deep ocean world.

But this is also a film about the oceans itself. By the 21st Century the oceans have changed beyond recognition from the place we saw in 1929 and the future may hold even more stark changes. Travelling the length and breadth of the oceans over 80 years, the film paints a portrait of a changing world, more powerful yet sensitive to change than we ever imagined and with the power to give life to the whole planet - or to take it away.

In a first for a TV series, the actors were filmed on parabolic flights to simulate zero gravity conditions so that they really are floating weightless in some of the scenes. Back on the ground, filming took place in some of the most inhospitable places on Earth to create a very real sensation of what it would look and feel like to walk on alien worlds. Award-winning film score composer, Don Davis, has created a spectacular soundtrack which brings the action, the drama and the sheer beauty of the scenery to life.
